Mixtape - Art that’s sometimes legal and sometimes not

There is a growing collection of websites dedicated to providing mixtapes which are compilations of songs recorded in a specific order. Sites like 8tracks, Songza, and Seeqpod are growing in popularity day by day. That popularity is highlighted by a site like Favtape which, as this article is going to press, is only displaying the message “Favtape is down due to server crashing issues.” Maybe they will be faring better by the time you are reading this article.

Mixtapes, which is actually a term derived from the words “mixed tape” are nothing new. They first entered into our lexicon with the growth of 8-track tapes in the 1960s. Mixtape enthusiasts believe that by carefully selecting and ordering the tracks in a mix, an artistic statement is created that is greater than the sum of the individual songs. While 8-track players were becoming widely used, 8-track recorders were still expensive and bulky. So these first mixed tapes were typically sold at flea markets or “hippie shops” into the early 1970s.

You’ll note mixtapes were never sold in your commercial music store because they were, and still are, illegal. So, while music piracy is a significant issue world wide, it is an issue with it’s roots in the 1960s. Through the 70s and 80s the mixtapes moved from flea markets to dance clubs and from 8-track to cassette. But, at the end of the day the recording quality was typically poor and distribution channels were limited.

So while the Recording Industry never liked mixtapes, through the 1960s and into the early 1990s they never made a huge deal about them. In recent years that has certainly changed. In 2003 Frank Creighton, then the Director of antipiracy efforts for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), was quoted as saying that “money did not have to be involved for copying to be illegal” and “digital mixes have better sound quality” and given the proliferation of CD burning ”it would be naive of us to say that we should allow that type of activity.”

But before the RIAA could get a handle of the issue of music copying and CDs, along came digital music files on the Internet and hand held music players. And right behind them came Internet music services like Pandora and mixtape sites like 8tracks and Songza.

But before I tell you about what mixtapes you can listen to, I have to mention what you can’t listen to. Muxtape.com launched to great fanfare in March 2008. The site became popular immediately after launching, with 8,685 users registered in its first day and 97,748 in its first month! But by August 2008, Muxtape was offline with the message: “Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.

But don’t despair, for every crisis there is a loophole to the rescue! 8tracks keeps on the right side of the law by making use of a DMCA loophole that allows it to operate as a small online radio station. So while you may think of 8tracks.com as an internet site, it operates as a radio station which means it pays lower licensing fees for the music they stream. The one key is that they don’t list the songs in the playlist - just like when you listen to a radio station you don’t know the songs in advance. Users can create playlists, their term for mixtapes, and they are free to share their playlists with friends. However, you can only play the songs while visiting 8tracks - they don’t empower any downloading of music. They embody the true spirit of the mixtape with the idea that “8tracks believes handcrafted music programming trumps algorithms. Think radio in the 1970s, mixtapes in the 1980s, and DJ culture of the 1990s through today.”

Songza also follows the straight line and right on their about page they state “Songza pays for licenses from all the major performing-rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC), who then pay the publishers and writers in proportion to the number of plays they get on Songza.” I’m not sure if their advertising model will cover all the costs and keep this service alive, but when you check out Quantcast you can clearly see the traffic is a coming! With links to Twitter and RSS feeds you can find some really creative ways to promote your playlists to friends and to hookup with playlists from other songza members.

Essayist Geoffrey O’Brien has called the personal mixtape “the most widely practiced American art form.” Sometimes it’s legal, sometimes it’s not. But clearly the last half a century has proven that people love mixing music and they are going to keep finding innovate ways to make mixtape art.

Richard Thompson compared his bumpy marriage to Linda Thompson to a roller coaster named "the Wall of Death" and Pink picks up this carnivalesque thread, calling her troubled relationship with motocross star Carey Hart a Funhouse on her own entry into a long prestigious line of autobiographical divorce albums that stretches back to Blood on the Tracks. Naturally, Funhouse doesn't have any musical similarities with either Blood or Shoot Out the Lights, but Pink's divorce album is also emotionally different than either of these classics or Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear. Dylan, Thompson, and Gaye layer their albums with self-recriminations and ruminations, niceties that Pink shrugs off in one song, the brooding "I Don't Believe You." Other songs allude to the pain of the separation but never in a way that digs deep -- the musically fine blues-rocker "Mean" trots out clichés, the delicate spooky Stevie Nicks folk of "Crystal Ball" skirts the divorce, and far from being a primal scream, "Please Don't Leave Me" surges on a Max Martin hook that pushes away the pain. But as Pink makes clear with the album-opening single "So What" -- also co-written with Martin -- she's more than ready to get out of this relationship, thrilled that she's still a rock star, still drinking in the afternoon. That her enthusiastic hedonism kind of contradicts the letter of her Britney-baiting "Stupid Girls" doesn't mean that it violates the spirit, as this is still the same Pink, the one who spits out jokes as she rumbles. This snotty stance is second nature to her, so maybe that's why Funhouse only really clicks when Pink abandons any pretense of mourning her relationship and just cuts loose with galumphing rhythms and schoolyard taunts, the kind that fuel both "So What" and "Bad Influence" and make them instantly indelible. This kind of oversized, obnoxious pop is where Pink's heart is at -- she's ready to party and as long as the tempo is high, Funhouse is a ride, empowered by her post-divorce freedom. In a way, that does make Funhouse unique among divorce albums, as it's the first to concentrate on liberation rather than loss -- but if she was going to go in this direction, Pink may have been better off not pretending that she's bothered by the breakup. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Seven years into its run and American Idol has finally produced a winner who can hold his own and work with his own Idols. This says more about David Cook, grand champion of season seven, than it does of the franchise itself: AmIdol suffered a significant ratings slowdown during its no-drama seventh season and, despite the megastardom of Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and Chris Daughtry, major-league stars only saw the show as a way to hock a new album. Fortunately, major-league stars hold no fascination for David Cook. As he proved time and time again on the show, Cook's greatest wish was to be an American Our Lady Peace, a hurdle that's not exactly hard to clear. This low ambition works in Cook's favor on his eponymous major-label debut as it gives him a goal that's achievable -- plus, it's been so long that this sound has been in fashion that his heroes are waiting in the wings, eager to contribute to a project that may just raise their own profile. Foremost among these is Cook's biggest idol, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, who co-wrote three songs, but he's not alone: Zac Maloy of the Nixons has three songs, while Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra assists on "Avalanche," forgotten neo-grungesters Infected rev up the record with the hardest-rocking (and best) song in "Bar-ba-sol," and Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, no stranger to reality TV himself, gets a credit on "Declaration." It's a virtual parade of second and third stringers from the late '90s, all led by Chris Cornell, who continues his slow march into alt-rock anonymity here with "Light On," a perfectly fine bland power ballad that strangely finds the Soundgarden singer trying to write like those who followed in his footsteps. All these rockers may give Cook some relative street cred but they're no guarantee for a hit record, something the AmIdol enterprise desperately needs at this point, so they're paired with certified hitmakers: Cathy Dennis comes in for "Heroes," Chantal Kreviazuk teams with Maida for "Permanent," and most notably, Espionage work with Maloy on his three songs. If Espionage's work leaves no discernible impact -- there's nothing that sounds remotely similar to Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable" or other hits they've penned for Chris Brown or Jessica Simpson -- Kerviazuk and Dennis compensate by gently weaving tried and true commercialisms into their songs, gently pushing Cook toward a crossover he's already made anyway. He not only is a star thanks to AmIdol, but he's always been ready to do big, happy, crowd-pleasing grunge-pop, as his self-released 2006 debut, Analog Heart, proved. David Cook is remarkably similar to that now-suppressed effort, heavy on crawling, melodic midtempo rockers and power ballads, only given more gloss in its production and writing. All this makes David Cook remarkably similar to the debut of his AmIdol forefather, DAUGHTRY, but where Chris Daughtry wallows in his stylized amorphous angst, Cook is a friendly puppy dog, eager to please. This may result in some embarrassing earnest moments -- none too coincidentally, they're almost all enabled by Maida, including "Mr. Sensitive," which rolls up the worst traits of Our Lady Peace and David Cook in one big blob of goopy glop, and the Maloy/Espionage "Life on the Moon" isn't far behind either -- but this enthusiasm makes David Cook a likable record: he's so happy to be here it's hard not to warm to him at least a little bit. After all, it's hard to be mad at somebody who wants nothing more than to make an album that could be played comfortably between the Toadies and Third Eye Blind. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Since Stephenie Meyer's hugely popular series of vampire books, Twilight, included thank-yous to the bands that inspired her writing, it makes sense that the Twilight soundtrack includes some of her favorite acts. Chief among them is Muse, whose darkly funky "Supermassive Black Hole" kicks off this mix of alt-rock brooding (Linkin Park, Collective Soul) and more eclectic -- but still mostly melancholy -- tracks. Paramore contributes two tracks, the churning "Decode" and the soaring ballad "I Caught Myself," neither of which match the best moments from the band's albums, even though Hayley Williams' crystalline vocals make a fitting backdrop to Bella Swan's supernatural love triangle angst. Most of Twilight follows suit with slickly dark songs like Mutemath's "Spotlight (Twilight Mix)" and Blue Foundation's "Eyes on Fire," and while they're not bad, they are predictable. The Black Ghosts' spookily folktronic "Full Moon" and Perry Farrell's dance-tinged "Go All the Way (Into the Twilight)" offer some changes of pace, with the former working better than the latter. The album's last moments offer a few glimpses of originality, even if actor Robert Pattison (aka beautiful teen vampire Edward Cullen)'s "Never Think" is heavily influenced by Jeff Buckley. Iron & Wine's "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" and Carter Burwell's "Bella's Lullaby" close the album on a relatively high note, elevating some of the overly typical choices earlier on the soundtrack. Even if it's often too predictable, Twilight fits the mood of the books -- and the musical tastes of the books' fans -- well enough to make it a reasonable success. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Akon spun off two number one pop hits and one number two from Konvicted, so he couldn't be blamed for working the same tricks on his third album, yet Freedom is a major change of pace -- the kind of drastic switch-up that normally happens after reaching a creative and commercial dead-end. Hip-hop and R&B are all but scrapped entirely. The set instead is rooted in the gleaming synthesizers and spring-loaded dance beats of Euro-pop. (That slamming jail-cell door trademark, deployed as much as ever, doesn't quite have the same alarming effect.) Akon sounds more comfortable than expected, and he reduces the lechery in favor of longing ("I wanna make up right now") and awe ("When I see you, I run out of words to say"). At times, the tensionless backdrops don't inspire Akon to do much with his pen; the chorus of "Beautiful" is basically "You're so beautiful, so damn beautiful," while falling for a stripper in "Against the Grain" is conveyed with "The way she drop down won't allow me to close my drawers." Child pornography is a growing concern of civilized society. Though there are no accurate numbers regarding the children directly and indirectly involved in child pornography, with estimates varying widely from a few thousands to hundreds of thousands, the spread of Internet use and the availability of high-tech spy cams in the civilian market have spurred on its seemingly relentless advance into the fabric of society.

Definition of Child Pornography

Depending on where you live, child pornography can have many definitions. However, you only need to remember that child pornography is generally described as any pornographic material that shows children being sexually abused.

When you see children depicted as sex objects in the nude or semi-nude, shown in explicit and implicit sexual poses, and engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind, then you are seeing child pornography at its worst. Hall of Famer jockey Russel Blaze wired his 10,000th race with a photo finish. In hotly contested races, a photo finish is the be all and end all. Without it, there would be endless protests, which would blur the thrill of winning the race. What if the photographer is caught up with the race and forgets to prep his camera? Not to worry, superior security cameras can do the job as long as it is propped in the right place.

In a horse race, a hair's breadth difference between the first and second placer cannot be detected by the human eye especially if two horses break through the finish line at the same time. To determine the winner, a photo finish provides the clue because it shows that millimeter difference between the winner and loser. The truth is in the photo finish or in the recording of security cameras that are strategically placed to catch the moment.

If you wonder how security cameras do the job, it is just a matter of the cameras constantly recording all the movements. Freeze framing the sets of recordings by the second will show the how the race was won.

How a Photo Finish Saves the Day

In the Tour de France when all cyclists speed to the finish line, it is impossible to tell who is the winner. A photo finish from a sophisticated electronic device does away with the guesswork and saves the day. Digital software takes 2,000 pictures in a second. Imagine that! This would have been impossible in your great-grandfather's time when they relied on the standby photographer to click the shutters.

These days, a photo finish can be captured by security cameras working with video transmitters that sends pictures or images to the monitors hooked up to the security system. These cameras can go wireless and can be hidden in the most unlikely places but still works superbly to capture and record movement.

Since these can be remotely operated, the trouble of trying to catch the precise moment at the finish line is a thing of the past. Results are immediately known and the frames per second can be viewed later for confirmation before fistfights can erupt. Or a slow motion replay can resolve the issue of who got to the finish line first.

Beyond Protection and Line of Defense

Security cameras have been initially viewed as protection against robberies and pilfering in the home and in the workplace. Security Cameras - Dawdlers' Enemy No 1

Dawdling?

Employees know better than to dawdle at work. Now that jobs can evaporate any time, workers are morphing into mean work machines, barely taking the time to stretch their legs or look out of the window to catch a view of the traffic or the inviting blue skies beyond the glass panes. While they are busy and you are dawdling, security cameras are working double time to record your moves.

Dawdling is no longer fashionable. When work piles up because of dawdling, there's hell to pay. Unless you are on the prowl for the year's outstanding employee, there is no excuse to dawdle anywhere on the hallowed grounds of the workplace.

If you haven't noticed it yet, the likely candidates for the contest are at their desks, working their butts off. Not that they are really inspired - they want to keep their jobs; the security cameras strewn all over the place must record their energetic bursts of hard work before the next round of job cuts.

Better have an iron-clad excuse for your tarrying if you still want your job. Employers feeling the economic crunch are ready to terminate people when demands for services and products have declined; so why should they keep you on the payroll if you're not working hard enough? Even the best workers are axed in the name of recession, why not you?

Why Dawdlers Hate These Cameras

Employers have not installed a security camera system to spy on their employees but to make sure that the business is safe from intruders and other unwanted guests. That's why it is called a security camera system in the first place, but the deal included keeping an eye on everybody to make sure that productivity levels remain at high levels. Nobody can be misbehaving now.

But if you insist to dawdle at the water cooler or at the corridor where there's a lot of traffic, you might find yourself jobless next week. That's how obnoxious security cameras are. They work silently, intelligently and they have very good memories. They relentlessly record every move you make and won't pause to give you a chance to pick your teeth in private.

The security monitors will gladly show if you have spent 5 or 30 minutes away from your desk; beware, just because you cannot see the security cameras in some office areas you behave like a fool. Hey! The more they are "invisible" the more you should watch your back.

Employers have grown smart with years of dealing with malingerers and dawdlers and the invention of these cameras have honed their skill in smoking out this notorious bunch. But apart from these cameras and suspicious bosses, it is best to behave; a job is hard to come by these days.

The ugly truth is, there is no escape from these cameras, which are here, there, and everywhere. Better stick to your cubicle and keep busy, but stop doodling on that piece of paper, the security cameras can't have enough of you. So plan your day at the office to get organized and stop dawdling.

Senseless Road Deaths and Lessons Learned From Traffic Video Security Cameras

Needless Road Deaths

Each year some 42,636 people die on the road. Most victims are done in by gigantic lorries and trucks as played back by traffic video security cameras. People have died from horrible wounds from the deadly impact of vehicular accidents or getting dragged and thrown meters away by a speeding car. If they survive, they are comatose, maimed or live with emotional and psychological scars time cannot heal.

From the footages, there are lessons to be learned. Improper use of seatbelts, speeding, overtaking other vehicles, and plain ignorance of traffic laws are the common causes of road deaths and vehicular accidents.

Evidences from video security cameras cannot nail the perpetrators. Errant drivers are let off with "driving without due care and attention" - when a life was lost here. This is outrageous indeed. Stories of only child deaths on the road are indications that stiffer traffic law should be carried out, or lorry and truck drivers should undergo training on careful driving to prevent needless deaths.

The video security cameras cannot stop road accidents but can provide proof of reckless driving and show the unfolding events leading to the accidents. The footages show lorries and trucks going through red lights without compunction, speeding, lorries swerving to beat traffic, and drivers taking to the wrong side of the road.

The video cameras have also caught hit and run drivers, but to no avail - the maniacs go free after brief jail terms while families have to live with the agony of losing loved ones for years.

As a parent, warn your children from biking in the fast lanes or drinking and driving. But the problem is, no matter how careful you child is, the maniacs on the road don't toe the line. They drive through red lights and drive beyond speed limits uncaring of the accidents waiting to happen.

As a parent, know the following statistics:

* Motor vehicle crash deaths occur during late night driving, usually between 9 pm and 6 am.
* The chance of deadly collisions increase when a 16 year old is at the wheel and 41/2 times more if the driver is alone.
* 60 percent of teenagers do not use seatbelts properly as shown by statistics of fatal car crashes.
* Drinking and driving have killed 23 percent of young people with ages 15 to 20

The traffic video security cameras show how road deaths happen and teach people how to avoid road accidents. But the most important lesson you can impart to your children is to teach them to be careful while they are driving or crossing the street. They have years ahead of them if they are careful. But drivers on the road should also heed traffic rules - the life they save maybe their own.
